Extra Innings – The Linn Hendershot Story is about a polio survivor that made the most of his life by helping others with disabilities and working as an advocate for systemic change. This film is a hopeful story that inspires courage to live life to the fullest no matter what your circumstances. Linn Hendershot had an unstoppable resilience. He had to get around on crutches most of his life but that did not stop him from having a successful career in the NFL and NASCAR doing marketing and promotions. Later, when relegated to a wheelchair and permanently using a ventilator, he continued to work as a disability advocate serving on committees to insure that the 1996 Atlanta Olympics were accessible. He was also a City Councilman for 4 years and helped bring awareness to local and national communities on the needs of the disabled population.
When he almost died of pneumonia and had to move to a long-term hospital, he created a computer lab there for the residents. He taught them how to use computers and located assistive devices for them to use. Linn did all he could to help his fellow patients connect with the outside world and have a bit more happiness and meaning in their lives.
It was never we can’t do it… It was how can we make it happen.
